Nikkin Thimmaiah’s life story:
Chandanda Nikkin Thimmaiah is
born on 18th January in the year 1991 in Virajpet, Karnataka and is a
professional Indian field Hockey player who plays at the forward position.
He began his career playing for the Indian Team in 2012.
Nikkin’s
life near the beginning
Nikkin was a
graduate from The St. Joseph’s Commerce College, but wasn’t a natural talent in
hockey, he was initially into athletics at the age of 15, but continued with
Hockey thereafter. “I started playing
hockey when I was in the 6th grade at the St. Joseph’s Indian High School, but
gave it up when I was around 15 to pursue athletics. I was a 400 metres runner
and I even won silver at the Open Nationals. A year after I gave up hockey my
father suggested I start playing again”, said Thimmaiah.
He took this opportunity
forward and worked hard to excel in this field. He definitely did struggle
initially, but did not give up and continued to persevere towards his goal. He
worked on his weakness and has now earned his title as one of the star players
in the national team. He was selected into the national camp under interim
chief coach Roelant Oltmans, This has helped him improve to a great extent and
develop his skills.
“Since this was my first camp, it has been a
through learning process. It’s a lot different from what we play domestically
and the coaches have been very patient with me. I’m still getting used to the
style of hockey played at the international level”, says Nikkin.

Thimmaiah’s Journey to Hockey
In 2012, Nikkin
Thimmaiah scored in two goals in two minutes as Pune Strikers defeated Mumbai
Marines 4-2 in World Series Hockey.
In 2014, around May
Nikkin ruptured his hamstring and was unable to play for the Indian Team in the
upcoming World Cup in Hague. He was prescribed for a month’s rest after which he
said that a month's training would suffice to get him back on track. He actively participated in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Korea that took place, and the Commonwealth Games at Gaslow in the same year. All this gave him a lot of fame
and he was well settled at the top position he was at. In the 2015 Sultan Azlan
Shah Cup, Nikkin scored tremendous hat tricks in their 4-2 win against
Australia. But unexpectedly he also had
injuries in his shoulder later on in the same year for which he underwent
surgery due to which he had to miss out on the three test series against
Australia and the Hockey world league final round.
“I had
the surgery done on my right shoulder. The surgery went off well and although
there is still pain when I raise my hand up, I hope to recover in the coming
weeks. It will take a month or so before I start hitting the training drills.”
Nikkin says when asked about his recovery.
Despite all
this, he is confident and is working towards making a comeback in the 2016 at
the Hero Hockey League.
In 2016, Nikkin
did show off his exceptional skills when he scored a goal 3 minutes from time and was a big aid in the victory
of India in the Hockey Champions Trophy in London.
