P R Sreejesh Biography
He is skillful enough not to block every shot but to make the opponent believe that he might block every shot. Goalkeeping is cleverness, not just a position on the pitch its passion and pride for Sreejesh!
This champ was born on
May 8th 1986 to P.V Ravindran and Usha in Kizhakkambalam village, in
the Ernakulam district of Kerala. He has come from a family of farmers.
The Vice-Captain says
he never had Hockey in mind, as a kid he always wanted to become an athlete as
he took up trainings for being a sprinter but later he ditched it for
Volleyball. At the age of 12 when he
moved to GV Raja Sports School Trivandrum, that is when his coach there advised
him to take up Goalkeeping as he was well-matched for it. He then carefully
considered Hockey and took it as a profession.
Sreejesh on a Personal note,
Sreejesh tied the knot
with PK Aneeshya, former long jump champion and ayurvedic doctor on May 12th
2013. The couple has known each other for 12 years before marriage, as they
first met at GV Raja Sports School. They were blessed with a baby girl in the
year 2014 and named her Anusree which was derived from the names Aneeshya and
Sreejesh.
Sreejesh started his career
with the junior national team in the year 2004. His first international match
was with Australia in Perth. He then joined the senior national team in 2006,
at South Asian Games in Colombo. In the 2008 Junior Asia cup, he won the ‘Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament’
which contributed more to the India’s win in that tournament.
For a large part of
his career, Sreejesh has mostly been under the shadows of the senior goalkeepers.
The South Indian accomplished himself as a regular member of the national team
after his two astonishing penalty stroke saves in the Asian Champions trophy
against Pakistan. The 2013 Asian cup gave him his second ‘Best Goalkeeper of the
Tournament’ award as India won the Silver
in the competition.
He was nominated for the award of Best Male Goalkeeper for his impressive performances in 2014, unfortunately lost to Jaap Stockmann of the Netherlands.

The year 2015, made
Sreejesh and his family the proudest as he grabbed the Arjuna Award for his brilliance
in field Hockey.
He served as the Captain
of the team at the Hero Champions Trophy 2016 held at London, finishing as
second in the tournament. The Indian team under him gave impressive performances
in the contest with much appreciation!
Sreejesh also represents the Indian Overseas Bank in domestics circuit.
Sreejesh won the Dhruv
Batra Player of the Year 2015 award for men at the Hockey India second annual awards
held on March 26, 2016. He bagged Rs.25 lakhs and a trophy for his achievements!
Sreejesh on Domestic Hockey
In the Hockey India League, Initially Sreejesh played for the Mumbai Magicians as he was bought by the Mumbai franchise for USD 38,000. Later by 2015, he was bought for the Uttar Pradesh Wizard with USD 69,000.Sreejesh also represents the Indian Overseas Bank in domestics circuit.
Sreejesh calls his strength
and his weakness are the same, the stubbornness to excel on the choice that he
has made! It helps him to adjust to everything but also keeps him agitated, he
says. His favorite food was tapioca with fish curry commonly known as kappa in
his native before joining the team.
Apart from Hockey he
is also interested in football as he follows if when he’s off the field.
