Harjeet Singh Indian Hockey Player: Biography, A tale of the young talent!
Harjeet Singh is a professional Hockey player
from Punjab. This young budding talent is a midfielder who represents the
captain of the Indian Junior Men’s team and is also the youngest member of
Delhi Waveriders. He started playing hockey in 2004 at Kurali's Gopal Hockey
Academy before joining Surjeet Hockey Academy in Jalandhar in 2008; immediately
joined the Punjab junior team which won the Junior National title in
2012&2013. That's when Harjeet made his Junior National debut in 2012’s
Sultan of Johar Cup.
As said by Harjeet,”I started as a forward but my coach at the Kurali Academy advised me to
play as a fullback. At Surjit Academy I often dreamt of becoming a full back like
Surji Singh ji but during the Junior Nationals last year, coaches Avatar Singh
and Gurudev Singh advised me to play in the midfield then Manpreet the Junior
skipper also plays there and has motivated me constantly. Baljit Singh Saini,
coach of the national junior side, He is one of the better centre halves in
India currently.”
Harjeet Singh’s Initial Journey:
Harjeet Singh has come up from a humble
background where his siblings also play hockey nut despite their financial
upheaval, the family borrowed money to buy him a kit. His family faced a lot of
hardships in encouraging his passion. He was asked to once quit playing hockey,
but his determination and focus took him to great heights of victory. Despite
all this, he still keeps his family first. His initial inspiration was from the
kids of his village and started as small as even carrying kit bags for senior
players. He worked his way up, out of his village and lived out his dream of
becoming a 17 year old prodigy.
In 2013, Harjeet was claimed to be the
most promising player of the Sultan of Johar Cup, under 21 Hockey tournament.
This was his biggest achievement till date. He won a lakh in regard to his
victorious squad. In 2014, in the Junior Men, Punjab outclassed Odisha by 6-2
in the finals and he was the man of the tournament. HIL has helped to boost
confidence says Harjeet Singh. He climbed his way to success by beginning with
the Punjab junior state team moved on to become the captain of the Indian
Junior Men’s team and was also the youngest of the Delhi Waveriders. As quoted
by him, “I have gained a lot of existence
and confidence from HIL. We got to learn a lot playing alongside foreign
players who are the best sport players and this will help us when we represent
India in future tournaments and championships.” In 2015, he played for the
Uttar Pradesh Wizards. In the same year, Harjeet Singh was selected as the
captain of an 18 member squad for the 8th Junior Men’s Asia Cup that
was held in Malaysia. The top 8 countries from Asia competed in this tournament.
Harjeet Singh’s Successful Accomplishments
Hockey India said that ,” Harjeet Singh
will be the skipper who was also adjudged the player of the tournament in the 5th
Sultan Johar Cup in Malaysia. Being the adjustable and positive spirited person
that he is, he was able to adjust to the new players and strategies especially
with the transition from Up Wizards to Delhi Waveriders. But he claimed that
the understanding between the players was really good and the regularly talk
about their mistakes and how to improve them He was also very content and appreciative
about the team captain, Rupinder Pal Singh. He may be the younger in the team
but is Eveready to take in all the experience and training. He continues to
live up to expectations and proves himself every single time. This
determination has led him to score numerous goals against the opponents.
Harjeet never stops pushing himself and strives for excellence every given
time.
Despite all this seriousness, he bonds
well with the team by making a strong cup of tea for the team. He says it’s
something that keeps his team awake and alert. He succeeded in bringing his
team to victory when they won the Asia Cup in 2015 especially by Harjeet's outstanding
field play as a midfielder. Another bright moment he was named the upcoming
player of the year at the Hockey India annual awards ceremony. It was a life
changing moment for him when he was awarded 10 lakh rupees on 26th
of March 2016. His leadership skills have been admired by all with the acknowledgement that he quite mature for his age. He is always looking for ways
to bring the team together and interested. His role models are Sardar Singh and
Manpreet Singh. He isn’t thinking much about the Rio Olympics but he hopes that
it will be a great opportunity for him as he awaits the world cup that will be
held in India in December this year.
