Indian Women's Hockey team: Journey to Rio, Olympics!
“Chak de phatte... nab de khilli” this the
traditional Punjabi saying which every Punjabi in the Indian team says before the match
begins this means to complete the route which leads to victory.
Indian Women's Hockey team as paved their way to the upcoming Olympics in style! We have got you the story of how the Indian Women's Hockey team made it to the Grand event... Indian Women's Hockey team in the Rio, Olympics!
Hockey in India
has always had a very great relevance and it is a sport that people relish to
pay and watch. The women of India have a greater significance in today’s modern
world than what it was before, they are respected and treated equally as men
they have flourished in each aspects of life be it in job business or work.
Women are like the beauty of our nation and they resemble the Bengal tigress
just as our women’s hockey team of India.
On
the field they are called as “The golden girls of Hockey.” The first time that
the team came into performance was in the year 1974 in Mandelieu, where they finished
in fourth place. Their best performance in Olympic Games was in the year 1980
in Moscow where they secured fourth place, when a women’s event was held for
the first time in Olympics. The team also won a gold medal in the inaugural
1982 Asian games which was held in Delhi and they defeated the Korean team in
the finals. The captain of the team Suraj Lalita Devi led the team to gold medals
for three consecutive years being as follows 2002 common wealth games, 2003
Afro-Asian game and 2004 Hockey Asia cup.
The team won a third place finish at the 2013 women’s hockey Asia cup at
Kuala lampur defeating china in a shootout. In 2014 it finished at fifth place
but at 2014 Asian games, Incheon stunned Japan 2-1 in a tight match to clinch
their third bronze medal at the Asian games.
The major turnover and apparently the buzz in town is India’s women hockey team qualifying for the Rio Olympics which is going to be held in Brazil Rio de Janeiro. It is apparently one of the greatest achievements and we Indians are truly proud about it. This being their second qualification for the Olympics ever, the only qualification India had was in the year 1980 where in they bagged a fourth place. Achieving the fifth place was enough for India to clinch the historic berth in the hockey world league semi finals in July as a place opened up after Netherlands and England reached the finals of the Euro hockey championships in London. The Indian women’s hockey team was waiting for a confirmation since July as they needed these two teams to qualify for the finals. India qualified as England Defeated Spain in the semi finals of unibet euro hockey championship in London which ensured their selection. India became the 10th team to qualify for the Rio Games after South Korea, Argentina, Great Britain, China, Germany, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and USA.
These
are the glimpses of our Indian women hockey team. The so called “Naari shakti”, (women empowerment) can
be purely displayed. Women, who are considered to as the backbone of the
society, are therefore doing some of the achievements which the so called male
dominating society fails to do so. This in a way is a motivational upliftment
for the females in India and something to be learnt from.
